The Philip Jaisohn House
100 E. Lincoln Street
Media, PA 19063
The Jaisohn Memorial House in Media, PA was home to Dr. Philip Jaisohn and his family for twenty-five years. It was from here that he recommenced his medical practice, resumed his active writerly work as an advocate of Korean independence, and led his daily life as a father, husband, physician and neighbor, and as a proud, grateful, engaged American citizen.
Built in a stately Federalist style in red brick, the Jaisohn Memorial and House is modest in scale, and sits on a small hill that overlooks a nature sanctuary which Muriel, his daughter, bequeathed to the borough of Media upon her death. The Foundation acquired the House itself as it was falling into disrepair and, after major renovations, opened it to the public in 1990. Today it is surrounded by a lush garden whose plantings harken back to the flora of Jaisohn’s Korean childhood.
The House is located in the county seat of Delaware County, the first Fair Trade Town in America. There is a picturesque trolley that runs directly through the town. It is a friendly area that has a remarkable story to tell, not least about a former resident who was the first American citizen of Korean descent.
The Philip Jaisohn Foundation seeks to preserve and share an important American story, and the legacy of a visionary man whose life spanned many disparate cultures and historical epochs. The Foundation also aspires to follow his counsel — that we contribute to American society and be of use. Events and programs consistent with this plan will be announced on the website.
The Foundation welcomes visitors interested in viewing the exhibit inside the house as well as strolling the surrounding garden. Please call (610)241-6582, (610)627-9768 or (267)414-9061 to schedule an appointment. Admission is free, although donations can be made on site. The Foundation also welcomes contributions toward the maintenance of the House and Museum via mail, which can be sent to: 100 East Lincoln Street, Media PA 19063.
